Department of Theatre Profile
Department/School: Department of Theatre |
Vision: To engage the young people of the Rio Grande Valley through the unit’s Theatre program and similar activities by not only offering opportunities to perform in productions dedicated to their creative interests and potential career goals but to provide entertainment, education, and enlightenment for local audiences and students. To uphold the concept that theatre, television, and film are complimentary creative formats with film and television not incomparable to filmed theatre, and that working experience and practice in all three areas will serve the career and scholastic goals of any theatre/television/film student no matter their specific interests or career goals. |
Mission: Provide the student artists in the program with the education and the tools in the classroom, studios and in production to allow them to cultivate, refine, and unleash the full range of their creativity and skills to convey their vision and intent to an audience in any media. Enable the students, faculty and staff of the department and the University to share this work with the public through performances, screenings and festivals. Recognize the value of a broad liberal arts education in the creation of a well-rounded practitioner in the theatre field so as to equip students to make positive cultural contributions as educators, professionals, and graduate students. |

Success Stories/ Bragging: Community involvement with the Theatre Department is exemplary. The community supports the theatre program with subscriptions to the annual play season, donations to scholarship fund campaigns and similar events. Faculty are involved heavily in activities which relate to theatre in the community, conducting a variety of outreach events, including readings, lectures, and screenings at local high schools, STC, conferences, Festiba, local art and media festivals, and other such events. Faculty is also regularly asked to workshop for local high and middle school theatre programs. In addition, every late February and early March, the College of Fine Arts conducts Festiba, an educational and entertaining event that promotes literacy and appreciation of the arts. Our department conducts a variety of events to support or enhance Festiba, including theatrical productions, community outreach events, play readings, and special performances. |
